I set my personal standard to “don’t be hideous” and I think I achieve it most days. Little kids don’t run away in terror.

Old photos show that in his young adulthood my father was a dead ringer for Bing Crosby. In my 20’s I used to get stopped on the street by people who said I looked like the actor Steve McQueen. No longer, alas — but then, he’s been dead for some time now. I do have a nice white beard.

I find that being overweight gives people the impression that I am much older than I am. Hair Cuttery gave me a Karen haircut because, according to all the people in the place, 'women my age' all want a Karen haircut. Women my age, meaning 65 (I was 52 at the time). Funny thing is, I was carded until I was 40 - about the time I got fat.

I do not enjoy hearing about other people's dreams, and I intensely dislike any book that features one or more dream sequences. "I had a bad/weird/great/funny/scary/whatever dream" is enough detail, thanks.

About those boring dreams, my take is twofold. First, they sound like the nocturnal visions of an aging intellectual. Or, you're reading Camus before bed. Assuming the part about the aging intellectual, this could well be the result of regularly waking up during the night from non-REM sleep, itself brought on by the effects of a formerly walnut-sized organ --- now grown to county fair prize-winning size, as I believe you shared with us in one of your regular bursts of too much information here. Interrupted sleep can take the presumably preferred edge off dreams. Think of it as an unfortunate "interruptus" all around.

I, too, have tiny pinky toenails. And hypochondria. If I grow a big mustache I'm going to have to start looking for a Weingarten branch on Ancestry.com.
