"Fuck J D Vance!" yelled the sofa. "Take a number and get in line!" replied My Pillow.

You’re couching your terms.

Sofa so good

To err is human, to forgive, divan. That's settee'd science.

I’m sure I’m not the first one to falsely quote JD as saying, “I did not have sexual relations with that sofa!”

The reason he propositioned the sofa in the first place is that he remembered that French song from the 70’s that asked, “Voulez vous COUCHER avec moi?”

By the way, do you know why he quit having sex with the sofa? He got stuck in the hide-a-bed mechanism. He thought about selling the sofa after that, but he doesn’t believe in leaving abusive relationships.

To be fair, it was supposedly an inside-out latex glove, not the upholstery itself. Apparently couldn't afford a full blow-up doll until later. But, opportunist that he is, understand he may now be working on a brand extension with the "My Pillow" guy.

I said yes, because they're jokes. As long as they're funny. Otherwise they're just bullying.

That’s why I clicked yes, too.

Taunting someone based on lies about them makes us look like idiots and suckers. Like the way we see MAGAts when they taunt Hillary Clinton, or Biden, or anyone else. When we taunt them, they are not able to see that it is a pointed critique of what they do; it just looks like validating what they do by fulfilling the claim, "everybody does it. It's political hardball."

Sorry, grie-VANCE knows very well what he said from the reaction to his clueless "childless cat ladies" comment for example, and then doubled down on it. As far as I'm concerned, it's always open season on willfully ignorant opportunists and unredeemable assholes like contri-VANCE.

Understandable reaction to the stupid things he has said about abortion, voting rights proportional to number of children, and so on. But Gene's question was specifically about sofa-fucking, which is an invention. Let's stick with critiquing and deriding him for things he actually said and did, which is a rich trove. We need not devalue it by mixing with false stories that bring the true things into question.

Yes, but it's funny.

Agreed. It is funny. That's the best defense. It is not like taunting Obama because his middle name is Hussein. That was true. This is clearly a joke, and it might just be fair game SO LONG AS IT IS FUNNY. It's a joke, ultimately, about the ubiquity of phony viral memes.

Fact is, he set himself up for it with all of his actual tommyrot and, especially his holier-than-thou attitude. A grateful nation simply delighted in puncturing his imperiousness, which does nothing to devalue all of his other real nonsense. Plenty of that to go around. And more to come. If a plausible and amusing canard bothers you, I expect you may find the next hundred days uncomfortable, as more show up with varying levels of jocularity.

Reaching back a couple of weeks to the mention of Pat Paulson, does anyone remember the bits he did on The Pat Paulsen Half a Comedy Hour “Then Came Paulsen”? Did he ride a bicycle or an underpowered motorcycle like a Yamaha 175? Seeing a guy on the bike trail yesterday wearing a red bandanna and aviator shades while riding one of those fat tire e-bikes pulled that memory out.

Wait--people used to die of "feminization" before a treatment was found for Hepatitis C? Did I really just read that? Please explain.

Expand full comment

It's not what they died of. They died of liver failure. But the end stage of liver failure, in a man, often involved a general body softening, loss of body hair, breast enlargement, etc.

OMG I'm not sure what aspect of this is most disturbing.

Thank you for the explanation.

One can only wonder how deep 'Vance-regret' will run. Trump's election would be a disaster, but is it possible that if The Orange Doofus should be elected, and then become incapacitated, that JD (Junior Doofus?) would be even worse? So far, it appears there is no one on the right who even knows they have a problem; and, pretending you don't have a problem does not make it go away.
