Love the way that story was written. And I was imagining someone the opposite of an asshole while reading it. His fear comes through but at the same time he is, either through an excellent knowledge of a potential audience’s POV or experience telling the tale, anticipating their lame reactions.
I test drove a Kia, once, over 20 years ago. Handled like a golf cart, the stick shift felt like a toy. But my experience didn’t give me any cool story, I simply told the dealer ‘no’ and walked away.
We bought what I think may have been the cheapest version of the Hyundai (an Accent) back in 2002. That little bastard ran for 20 years and 388,000 miles. And they were NOT kind miles.
But then again, its successor barely made it 7 years/ 130,k miles.
We now have, on the recommendation of my son the professional car reviewer, a 2023 Kia Soul. It gets 40+ mpg with a regular gas engine; it's just really efficient. And much roomier than my previous car, an ancient Scion. And it's been operating perfectly.
A round of applause, Jay Moore, for the excellent story!

Damn fine story. I hope, Jay, that you will understand if I decline your invitation to go fuck myself.

KIAs and Hyundais of 20 years ago were disposable vehicles. I used to joke that the KIA brand name was the acronym for Killed In Action.

I made a point of saying it was a long time ago because they’ve certainly had a chance to get better. Don’t see how they could’ve gotten worse.

My parents also own a Kia and it’s better than the one I test drove. It’s also automatic, so of course ai have to turn my nose up at it.
