Wow. How'd you find that?

I've been an amateur stalker of dead people for a long time, so I have a subscription to that site. I searched for "Gene Weingarten is right". As a long-time reader, I promise not to reveal the actual number of search results I had to sort through to find this one.

Because all those other search results kept coming up "Gene Weingarten is wrong?"

Gene! Eric Brace here... I was AT that "Greatest Game" in 1978 at Fenway... skipped out on college classes and took the bus into town with a pal who'd gotten tickets! I felt bad for Yaz, but... what a game.

I'm going for a double here. "Gene Weingarten is the back end of a simile," I think qualifies as a two prong entry, n'est-ce pas ? And no, this would not make 2023 the best year of my life. But if you were to permit a one-time substitution of "possibly amusing" for "stupid," I would be ever so grateful.

Never a fan of the Evil Empire, but always loved "The Iron Horse." Loved him from afar, starting as a baseball crazy kid who latched onto him through baseball cards, books and of course, "The Pride of the Yankees." He represented an ideal, the ultimate ballplayer to aspire to. Oh, the contemporary players were good, but Lou, well Lou, was special. He let his bat do the talking. So --- your image of Lou Gehrig brought a lump to my throat. Anyone who hears his famous farewell speech can not help but be moved, baseball fan or not. Known for his extraordinary prowess at the plate and durability as well as, sadly, the common namesake of the horrific disease (ALS) that carried him off at 37. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNLKPaThYkE

In the immortal words of that great American and notable courtier, John McEnroe, "You cannot be serious !" Apart from something being, shall we politely say, significantly "off," for someone whose "greatest year" has even remotely to do with the Evil Empire ---I would remind that "someone" of the extraordinary 3-down come back of America's team (that would be the Boston Red Sox) against the very same Evil Empire in the 2004 ALCS -- which then went on to sweep the Cardinals in the Series to break an 86-year-old curse. Now that's a great year. And then there's the Cubs' 3-1 deficit comeback win in the 2016 "underdog" Series to break the longest championship drought in North American professional sports history. Another great year. Would have been even better if the AL opponent had been the Evil Empire.

In a continuing effort to help Gene fulfill his community service obligation (long story) and finally get my communication merit badge, I have tried here Poolside to bring attention to significant developments which would otherwise be willfully ignored. With that in mind, it has come to my notice that in addition to the more common gender cross-dressing, there is now species cross-dressing. A Japanese man known as Toco has spent more than $14,000 to realize his desire to become a collie --- a worthy, if somewhat difficult aspiration to fulfill. The company that manufactured his collie costume, says it took 40 days to create the furry fashion item, which cost a cool JP¥ 2 million (USD $14,161).  When asked about his dogged desire, Toco noted, “I rarely tell my friends because I am afraid they will think I am weird. My friends and family seemed very surprised to learn I became an animal.” Yes Toco, so am I. Certainly gives new meaning to getting down on one's hands and knees to beg. https://youtu.be/MA4UhxfTwVk

I’ll never forget when Thurman Munson died. I was just a NY kid living in Jersey. He used to visit communities in the area with the rest of the Yanks. The Palisades Parkway took us to Queens and Yankee Stadium. It was a dark day. I remember it well, and I was just a kid.
