I don't understand why sleeping passengers should have the right to keep others from looking out the windows. I've had this problem myself and I will still snap open the screen periodically to see what's going on outside, snap a few photos or look with binoculars. This image reminds me of what you can see when flying over Alaska (which we already own). The glaciers and how they flow together or the river channels and their meandering are fascinating to look at. One of the best reasons to fly, in my opinion.
Safe flight to you both, and thank you for sharing that spectacular shot of Greenland that Rachel snapped (but Trusk/Mump had better not see it or they’ll become even further obsessed by their dumb dream of nabbing that land!).❄️❄️❄️
Trump would decide he really had to annex Greenland so that he can say that America has the best glaciers. He might even move one to the South Lawn of the White House.
I like to watch out the window. I’m sorry about those who want to sleep. I want to know whether there’s something out there on the wing and whether I need to prepare to survive. Fuck those who want to sleep.
Gene, you mentioned flying into Reykjavik, if your layover there means you're flying at night, you should definitely keep a shade up. People often see auroras from the plane on flights between Reykjavik and North America.
I do still think it was funny that people a long, long time ago thought: "Hmmm, well, not a lot to work with here: I know, let's call it Greenland -- people will think it's full of lush green valleys and farmland."
Not too far off. Erik the Red who got kicked out of Iceland wound up in a place then called "Land of the People" and decided he wanted some other people for company. Considering this was before social media and information traveled slowly, he decided like another failed real estate developer of our acquaintance to try a bait and switch and call the place "Greenland" --- much more welcoming than "SnowColdlandia" --- and difficult to leave once you're there.
Um...how much ya think we oughta pay for it? And, thanks to being on a B-777 Rachel was able to raise the shade. Had you been on a 787 again, windows are controlled electronically from the flight deck so you wouldn't have been able to get the stunning view. Should be entering Canadian airspace shortly. If you look quickly again, you may see a message picked out in lights saying something about Demento and his sidekick and someone's mother.
I spent 3 years in the early 80’s in the Navy flying over the Arctic collecting data that would allow our ballistic missile subs to destroy the remaining part of the world after the ICBMs and bombers did their thing. Otherwise, beautiful.
To Hell with the directive for shutting the windows. Views like this are so rare. The glacier in the left foreground of the picture is spectacular.

He’d only move a glacier if he could figure a way to monetize it.
He’d package it as glacier ice and sell it for $500 a pound.

Twilight Zone!
"There's a... thing...on the...wing!"
Bah ha ha ha ha! Well played!

I love that you considered this an emergency.

Putin has Siberia. Trump has envy.

Given your “Holy Cow” title for this post, i figured you were over India.
Where exactly might the Trump Resort and Golf Club be sited?
Greenland from the air is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.
I also hate folks who object to seeing the sights from the air. Why have windows?

I’ve sneaked a peak many times and always was awed so at long last I plan to be in Greenland in the autumn to see it from below. Such beauty!

Our 52nd state, according to the maroon.
Let 'em wear sleepmasks. It's easy enough. It's not light that makes it hard for me to sleep on airplanes.
